
| COMMERCIAL ARTS SYLLABUS - LEVEL ONE - SPRING SEMESTER - 2012 1. WELCOME ORIENTATION WHAT IS COMMERCIAL ART? (One Week) You will be: We go over class information and procedures, you get your notebook in order, paperwork signed by your parents, get to know people, listen to Mr. Juul, get your supplies, learn about what Commercial Art is. Expect a Quiz over Classroom Information & What Is Commercial Art? 2. USE OF TOOLS: Adobe PHOTOSHOP (Three Weeks+) You will be: Playing around in Photoshop, going through a few basic tutorials about Photoshop, working on some Photoshop worksheets and online tutorials. You will create yourself as an animated character using an online character generator. You’ll take, color correct and manipulate your own photo. You’ll be learning about file formats, toolbar, special filter effects, how to manipulate text and photos and how to save and set up your file to print. 3. THE DESIGN PROCESS (One Week+) You will be: Watching a Powerpoint on What Design Is and What The Design Process Is. This includes how you get ideas, sketch them out and produce a final piece of work. Working on seeing, sketching and getting your ideas down on paper fast. Understanding the steps involved in the creative design process and why each is necessary. Also covers the basics of what design is and is not and a history and overview of graphic communication. 4. PHOTOSHOP - PHOTO RETOUCHING (One Week) You will be: Learning how to use skills of photo retouching to create portfolio pieces and solidify an in-demand job skill. Retouch damaged photos and restore them to their original look. 5. PHOTOSHOP - FILM COLLAGE (One Week) You will be: Learning how to create the look of a movie film, crop and manipulate photos, design to specification and create a "lobby card" style film collage using photos from their favorite film. EXAMPLE 6. PHOTOSHOP - WHACKY PACK / PRODUCT PARODY (Two Week) You will be: Learning how to use your Photoshop skills to create a parody of a popular advertising icon or product packaging. Match fonts an colors while using your sense of humor to create a fun portfolio piece. EXAMPLE 7. USE OF TOOLS: Adobe ILLUSTRATOR (Three Weeks+) You will be: Playing around in Illustrator, going through a few basic tutorials about, working on some introductory Illustrator projects and online tutorials. You will creating a self portrait and photo trace. You'll be using Illustrator to create a completely text based poster. You’ll be learning about file formats, toolbar, special filter effects, how to manipulate text and photos and how to save and set up your file to print. 8. LAYOUT - FAKE TABLOID MAGAZINE COVER You will be: Creating a fake celebrity tabloid magazine cover or other genre cover. You should be featured in at least one article. Learning the in's and out of space design and layout, necessary to almost all facets of text based advertising. 9. READING / WRITING SKILLS: FILM REVIEW: Exit Through The Gift Shop (Three Days+) You will be: Writing a three paragraph review of the film and posting it to class blog site 10. LOGO DESIGN (Four weeks+) Learn the In’s and out’s of simplicity in design. Learn about why branding is important to any business and why logo design is as equally important. Learn about how fonts and color effect the design. Create for business, products 11. MARKETING & PACKAGING FINAL PROJECT (Three+ Weeks) You will be: Using your newfound skills to create actual packaging for a product chosen at random. You will create a QR Code for it which will link to our class website. |

WEB DESIGN (Two-Three weeks) You will be: Using your Layout design knowledge to create a one page portfolio for yourself using WIX.com free website software. Purpose is to understand how easy some web design has become while exploring the ideas behind good and bad design in regard to web layout. How easy it is for designers to create professional websites which promotes their work. Link this to the Juularts.com website. 11. MARKETING & PACKAGING FINAL PROJECT (Three+ Weeks) You will be: Using your newfound skills to create actual packaging for a product chosen at random. You will create a QR Code and create a one page website devoted to promoting the product. Creating animated web banner / ad and a smart phone ad. Photograph final packaging. Create an isometric perspective of packaging / One page ad / poster. |
